The Worry Solution is featured in the January 2011 issue of Elle Magazine. The article mentions that "...it was The Worry Solution's mental exercises I turned to for calming the shakes."
THE TRUTH ABOUT ANXIETY & STRESS
You experience stress when the demands on you exceed your perceived capacity to cope. Stress negatively affects every major organ and system in your body.
Hi. My name is Dr. Martin Rossman, and I’m really happy that I have this opportunity to share some of the best-kept secrets about over-coming worry, anxiety and stress.
As an M.D, I have seen that stress can cause or worsen many health conditions, among them arthritis, gastrointestinal disorders, addictions, diabetes, chronic pain, sleep disorders, angina, hypertension, PTSD, eating disorders, immune system suppression and cancer.
You need to know that it is estimated, for both men and women, that 50-75% of all visits to primary-care doctors are related to stress.
Unrelieved stress is also a significant risk factor for heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndromes, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, and asthma, among many other illnesses too numerous to name.
Chronic stress can cause, not only anxiety, depression, and insomnia; but also headaches, neck and back pain, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, high blood pressure, heart palpitations, trouble breathing and a host of other physical symptoms.
I can make the case that virtually every illness is stress-related because it is either caused by stress, aggravated by stress, or in itself is stressful.
Are you feeling motivated to get a handle on your worrying?
I sure hope so! But first, realize that you are not alone.
Over 20 percent of Americans (60 million people) have diagnosable anxiety disorders, which include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, specific phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.
These stress conditions are 2-3 times more common in women.
Another 60 to 100 million people struggle with toxic habits or addictions like alcoholism, cigarette smoking, drug addiction and eating disorders that they use in order to poorly manage stress. Yikes.
And almost everyone else is simply nervous about what‘s going on in the world, and would like to find a way to feel more relaxed…. just like you!
We are more often frightened than hurt; and we suffer more from imagination than from reality”.
~Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4 BC-65 AD) Roman philosopher
Let me explain a little about what goes on in your body when you worry:
When you worry, your body prepares for "fight or flight," putting in motion a chain of physiological effects that can leave you exhausted, depressed, or physically ill.
This is because worrying keeps your body on alert, and eventually those hormones that keep you fired up run down, leaving you feeling fatigued.
And that means the energy that your body is using to handle constant stress is no longer available for optimizing basic functions like digesting your food, healing bruises or cuts, and getting you out of bed in the morning.
Over time, worrying is just like going into DEBT! You spend your body’s energetic stores, and then you run out of cushion to support your every day needs.
I wrote my book, THE WORRY SOLUTION, for people just like you who are exhausted with letting worry run their lives.
THE WORRY SOLUTION is ultimately about having freedom and choice.
It‘s about using the gifts you‘ve been given—your birthright intelligences—to live the fullest, freest, most fulfilled life you can.
YOUR IMAGINATION IS POWERFUL
"I have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.”
~Mark Twain
Research by psychologist/author Robert Leahy, Ph.D., of Weill Cornell Medical School shows that 85 percent of worries don‘t have the bad outcome the worrier anticipates, and even when the worries do come true, 79 percent of people say they handled the outcome better than they thought they would!
But often, our fears run away with us, and the techniques we use to manage them only make us sick.
Excessive consumption of alcohol, overeating, smoking, and even prescription drug use help to relieve stress in the short run but they are toxic in the long run. New research shows that people who take prescription anxiety relief medications have 36% higher mortality after the age of 55.
Medications and substances are ultimately ineffective because they don‘t address the true nature of our stress, or how we can best respond to it. They have adverse effects on our health and, most importantly, don‘t teach us how to cope.
Most of us have never been taught to use our imaginations skillfully or well. We get stuck in the default position, which is to worry needlessly, habitually, and ineffectually.
It‘s not that there isn‘t plenty to worry about; it‘s just that lots of it is optional and unnecessary!
At this critical time in human history, when we are facing so many personal, social, and global challenges, it is imperative that we learn to use our brains to full capacity and not fritter away energy on futile worry.
THE WORRY SOLUTION will teach you how to use your mind and brain to eliminate unnecessary suffering and the negative health impacts caused by worry.
THE SOLUTION
While THE WORRY SOLUTION won‘t eliminate all pain and suffering, it will eliminate unnecessary suffering that you may have been creating for yourself by being unaware of how your brain and mind work.
You may not have realized before that your worrying has become a chronic habit, or that you can change mental habits.
The latest brain research confirms that the most effective way to change a worry habit is by developing a new habit that, when practiced, takes the place of the old habit, eventually grooving new pathways in the brain.
Healthy stress management includes physical exercise, talking things over with friends, family, or professional counselors, taking vacations, pursuing hobbies, praying, meditating, solving problems, but most importantly, the keys to relieving worry, anxiety and stress are to sort out which worries are worthwhile, and learning to use relaxation and visualization processes like the ones I will teach you.
There is a good deal of research that demonstrates the benefit of relaxation and guided imagery in relieving and managing worry and stress, and in supercharging your creativity.
Imagery is the language of dreams and daydreams; memories and reminiscence; plans, projections, and possibilities. It is the language of the arts, the emotions, your deeper self, and the brain regions in which that ancient wisdom abides.
Imagery is the neurological royal road to reconnecting with the deep emotional and intuitive wisdom that has guided humans to thrive… for hundreds of millions of years!
And it’s EASY to do.
In fact, you are already using imagery when you worry! You are just using it unconsciously and creating results that are not helpful to you! You just need to become conscious of how to use imagery to guide yourself toward more peaceful and creative states.
When you aren‘t sure what to do, or when you have a problem that you can‘t figure out, imagery makes room for the silent, emotional, intuitive areas of your brain to express themselves and add their wisdom to our perspective.
TRUE STORY FROM THE BOOK:
Madeline, a 28-year-old secretary, came to see me with a severe migraine headache. We had worked together before, so I guided her through a simple progressive relaxation technique, asked her to focus directly on her pain, and urged her to invite a wise, friendly image into her mind that could tell her something useful about the pain.
She pictured a large mynah bird sitting on her head and pecking away in the area of her pain. "Why is he doing that?" she asked, and I suggested that she ask him, and imagine he could answer in a way she could understand. To her surprise, the bird answered, "Why not? You let everyone else pick on you!"
Madeline started crying, and told me that the day before, she had accidentally overheard a fellow employee making fun of her in the coffee room. She started to get angry, but then got nauseous, and started to feel a migraine aura. She went home for the day and the migraine developed to the point that she came to my office.
In her imagery dialogue, the bird agreed to work with her to better understand and
prevent her headaches. She left feeling 90 percent relieved with no other medical intervention.
Continuing internal dialogues with the mynah revealed Madeline‘s long-standing pattern of low self-esteem and passivity. The mynah told her that holding anger inside led to her headaches. I referred her to a good therapist and after a while she was much better able both to recognize and to express her needs and her feelings. Not only was she relieved of headaches, but she was much happier and heading in a more successful life direction.
Her discomfort had led her to look inside and when she did, she found the wisdom she needed in order to move forward with her life.
You’ve got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative…”
